Why does the WordPress world insist on using FTP for everything? Coming from the Rails world, it seems crazy to give someone FTP credentials to modify your code directly in a production environment.
For any remotely serious WordPress project, I would expect the developers to at least be using git and probably some kind of deployment script. My weapon of choice is Capistrano, but whatever works.
