Ideas

States are obsolete, it would be much more efficient to do away with them and manage most common programs on the national level, doing away with 50x of each of the following:

  • DMV
  • Transportation agency
  • Dept. of Revenue & Taxation
  • Sales tax rules, requirements, compliance and administration
  • health department
  • state legislatures
  • state senates
  • insurance and financial regulations. de-stateifying could increase competition and better consumer terms (or make it worse, who knows)

If you want to create further efficiencies, there are over 3,000 counties in the US, which handle:

  • land registry + real estate titling
  • election commissions

Problems:

  • many people employed by state and county governments and their respective agencies
  • would need to retrain a lot of clerical people to do other tasks
  • you’d still need some sort of local/regional implementation and tailoring for some things
  • common state agencies could be merged into the federal version thereof?
